Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Festival NYE fireworks to smash two world records.The biggest New Year’s Eve (NYE) celebration in the UAE will happen at the Sheikh Zayed Festival in Al Wathba, Abu Dhabi.
A 35-minute fireworks show is all set to smash two Guinness World Records: The world’s first ever Girandola fireworks show and the largest straight-line fireworks display.

Where is Al Wathba? It is a suburban area, which is around 45km from Abu Dhabi City. Al Wathba hosts the Sheikh Zayed Festival annually and is famous for its Wetland Reserve. What is the Sheikh Zayed Festival? It is held under the patronage of the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with the support of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
Named in honour of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the festival celebrates the country’s cultural inheritance and rich diversity of traditions. It is a global cultural festival held annually to coincide with the National Day celebrations.
As one of the largest cultural festivals in the UAE, it has been selected among the five most important cultural events in the world. The 90-day festival started from November 20 and runs till February 20.
How to reach the venue. Depending on where you stay in Abu Dhabi City, you can take the Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Street (Old Airport Road). Even if you start from the Sultan bin Zayed The First Street (Muroor Road), it will eventually get merged with the Old Airport Road. Alternatively, you can also drive on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street (Mussafah Road). The 44km to 48km travel from the city to the festival site will take 30 to 40 minutes of driving. Using GPS coordinates is the best way to reach the destination.

Is there more to the NYE festivities than just fireworks? There are a host of pavilions and exhibitions showcasing the UAE culture and heritage. The festival also features camel and horse races, falconry shows and musical performances. It also boasts of a fountain show using advanced technology. Special events, competitions and recreational activities for children include Laser Tag, Funfair City, Kids Nation and Al Wathba Custom Show.
